Husqvarna E-Bicycles Racing successfully complete debut EWS-E in Switzerland

We’re officially racing now!

Alex Fayolle and Marco Melandri get Husqvarna E-Bicycles Racing underway in the Enduro World Series at the series opener in Switzerland.

Fayolle digs deep on his Mountain Cross 7 to claim 26th overall in EWS-E Pro Men, while Marco Melandri shines with third in Masters 35+ on his Hard Cross 8 in Crans Montana.

The opening round of the 2021 EWS-E was a big one for all. With nine stages planned across a 60-kilometre-long course, which covered upwards of 4,000 metres of elevation, it pushed riders to their maximum, while tight liaison time controls further added to the physicality of event.

Alex makes his enduro debut

Competing in the highly competitive Pro Men class, a strong start to the day saw Alex place inside the top 15 on the first two stages. But a slow puncture on stage three pushed him back to 19th. The uphill power stage proved itself to be the most critical of the day and in making numerous mistakes, Alex lost time to his rivals.

“There were some ups and downs along the way,” admits Alex. “A slow puncture, some crashes and a bad run on the power stage didn’t help, but on the more downhill style stages I felt like my speed was good.”

Finding his rhythm again on the final loop of the day, the Frenchman put his Mountain Cross 7 back inside the top-20 with 17th and 12th on stages seven and eight. Unfortunately, a crash on the ninth and final stage ended his hopes of a debut top-20 result, finishing his day in 26th overall.

“It’s been a massive learning experience for me this weekend, but it feels great to have done my first EWS-E,” he continues. “My plan is to try and digest everything that’s happened and work to improve on it next weekend in Finale Ligure.”

Marco shines in Switzerland

For Marco Melandri, the opening round of the EWS-E proved to be highly positive. Simply riding for fun with friends and there to enjoy the experience of competing in a world championship event in mountain biking, Marco surprised everyone, and even himself, with a podium result in Masters 35+.

“Ah, it’s awesome to finish on the podium today, I didn’t really expect it,” tells Marco. “I had a lot of fun on the stages, well maybe not the power stage, but everything else I really enjoyed.”

Loving all stages bar the tough power stage, he continued to perform stronger as the day progressed. Inside the top 10 at the midway point of the day, he then upped his pace to post the fastest time on stage six. On a roll he went on to win stage eight, while placing second on stages seven and nine, securing a well-deserved third overall.

“Next week in Finale Ligure is almost like a home race,” he concludes. “I would love to improve on this result if I can!”

With the team’s first-ever EWS-E in the books, racing continues in Finale Ligure, Italy next week with round two on September 16. Husqvarna E-Bicycles Racing team sponsors include Kenny Racing and Sunlight, Crankbrothers, SIXPACK, Vee Tire Co, GALFER and Monkey’s Sauce.
